The Road Less Traveled… Very Slowly

Sunday, 8 December 2024

If you thought overlanding was all dramatic jungle encounters and colourful cultural exchanges, let me introduce you to the real experience: the roads.

The photo says it all—deep red dirt, potholes that look like they’ve been training for marathons, and a general vibe of “good luck.” Because Nala, our beloved yellow truck, is more heavyweight champion than nimble gazelle, this means progress is… leisurely. At an average speed of 11-14kph, you could ride a bicycle past us, and the local kids often do.

Poor Paul, our champion driver, deserves a medal—or at least a very long nap. Nala’s clutch is about as light and forgiving as a gym’s leg press machine on max weight, and after a full day of stop-and-go over bumpy terrain, he’s basically using his left leg as a human jackhammer. Every night, Paul staggers out of the cab looking like he just survived the Tour de France on one pedal.

As for the rest of us, the slow crawl through the countryside has its perks. It gives us plenty of time to admire the jungle, wave at curious locals, and reflect on life. (Also, to wonder what exactly that rattle is.)

The roads may be brutal, but they’re part of the story, and what’s an adventure without a little red dust, a lot of patience, and a truck named Nala holding it all together?
