We arrived in Rio in the late afternoon and had a brief walking tour before dinner. I’ve only really seen Rio from the air on the flight in, but what stuck out the most was how huge it was. Medium density housing as far as the eye could see. Tomorrow we go to the top to visit Christ the Redeemer, and I look forward to getting a better view of the city.
Our guide did have some cautions about Rio, she said that in all the other cities her warnings have been about pickpockets and how they generally aren’t violent. Here her warnings were much stronger. Violence is a thing, don’t carry anything valuable, no jewellery, don’t have your cellphone showing and don’t store it in your pocket. If someone demands your stuff, just give it. Only travel in groups.
This city is the only one where I’ve heard such stern warnings. It does give off that vibe too. It’s a pity because the city is also very beautiful.
Dinner tonight was at a restaurant that charged by the kilo! A buffet where they weighed your plate after you got your food. Food was good and wasn’t bad price — $30 for 2 pina coladas, water, and a decent sized meal.
