Today we went by bus from 2000m (7600ft) up and up and up. Our peak today was 4910m (16,100ft). For comparison Everest Base Camp is around 5300m (17,400ft).
For me, due to long Covid, I had to pay special attention and while my symptoms of altitude sickness were mild (mild headache), my SpO2 did drop a bit lower than advisable. But everything is relative, my baseline at sea level is lower than ideal.
Fortunately after only a short while we piled back into the bus and descended back down to 3600m (12,000ft). We will get higher again but not as high as we just did. This is ideal and proper acclimatisation. Sleep lower than your peak. We’re currently in Chivay, Peru.
Tomorrow we’re heading out early and later we will do a short hike to test out acclimatisation. I’m still doing well, my headache got to an annoying level and had a bit of fatigue, but it’s hard to be sure whether that’s altitude or just a long day. One member of our group isn’t doing too well with the altitude, but time will tell, they will hopefully be better by morning.
During our travels today we saw llamas and alpacas. I’ll have more photos in days to come, we all take photos on our own cameras and then sync them to our photo share when we have the wifi and time.
Addendum: we are now up in the desert in the Peruvian mountains, so it’s getting cold. No more 30° days. Tonight it drops to 0.

Looking friendly with that llama mate (or alpaca, I can't tell) 😆😆 from Bex
This will make travelling in Spain and Italy with me seem very relaxed Mum.
Make sure you adjust your ingredients if you plan on baking a cake at altitude!
Wow. Loving this. Bex sent me the link.
