| Cesar, our local guide for the ruins |
Today, our full day in Copan, we visited the Mayan ruins. I can’t do justice to the story, but I will say I was quite interested in them, our local guide (for the ruins) was most engaging and kept our attention. It was fascinating that the site was built layer upon layer, each dynasty built upon the temple layer of the previous. They built on the wisdom of their ancestors — literally.
Because they used volcanic rock here, as opposed to other sites a where they built using limestone, these structures have survived in a much better state, and underneath and inside them the natural and original colours has survived.
As the civilisation collapsed and the trees took over they both damaged and kept together the structures. The giant roots worked their way over them and the roots actually protected the structures from collapsing.
It was rather hot in the sun, and regrettably the Mayans either didn’t include sunshades in their construction, or they were lost to the ravages of time.
