A new journey begins...

Sunday, 19 November 2023

I am dusting off this blog to document yet another journey, this time I'll be visiting places such as Spain, Iceland, Switzerland, and some places in South America.

How did this start? I took a voluntary redundancy at work because they offered a package that was hard to say no to. Quite a few people took the package.

It’s less than a week before I head off, and the following two statements are both true, and entirely false: “my bag is packed”, “my apartment is packed”. Depending on how you look at it, those are true. Or not. Edit: lol, in no way were those statements true. They still aren’t true as of Wednesday!

My journey ahead is somewhat vague, but with some key dates (fixed points in time, if you will).

  • Sat Nov 25th: Leaving the UK, for Valencia, Spain, to see my cousin Tania, who I haven’t seen in probably 20 years?
  • Dec 3rd: Madrid, to see my friend Martin for a few days.
  • Dec 11th to Dec 18th: Iceland, to spend the week with a family I’m friends with.
  • Jan 4th to 7th: Doing some distillery visits with Yuri, a friend from the whiskey society.
And that’s it for fixed dates. Oh there are more plans, Costa Rica from mid Jan, Switzerland mid-late Dec, New Year’s in Scotland? But those aren’t confirmed yet.

However, I have now got travel insurance (a non trivial task for someone whose residence would aptly described as “no fixed abode”, but that is sorted. And I also have a few of the more pressing flights booked.

There are so many European budget airlines that while I’m flush for choice, they all have terrible reputations, and when you factor in having a checked bag, it’s often cheaper to fly a better airline.

Equipment:
I am travelling with my trusty backpack from previous journeys, in fact both the large one and the day pack from Nepal, because I will also be travelling with my laptop and iPad, because of course I will.
